22/10/10 Editing

I was not present for this lesson as I had already set off on my holiday. The girls took part in some serious editing and updated me on our progress so far.

What they achieved:

1. They edited up to the First Chorus, and spent the majority of their time editing the pre-song footage.

2. They cut down and selected the Emily & Joe footage that we wanted to appear in the First verse, where Laura and myself are perfoming.

What went well?

(Taken from both Laura and Jodie's blog's)

Although we spent the majority of the two hours working on the pre-song footage, we felt that the over-all result was good. However, we did come across a few problems and diffculites... these were:

1. The shots were too long. We found that a lot of the shots of Emily were too lengthy, and although the tone of the song is slow and sad we felt that this bit needed to be sharp and edgey to make it more dramatic. We did this by deciding against using continous shots that flowed to using jump cuts. Ordinarily, we would not use this type of shot when editing, but we found that it worked in making the flow move quicker; we felt it did not look odd because the footage itself is of Emily moving out of her house dramatically.

2. Corresponding the two cameras together. The footage we edited today was shot from two seperate cameras, this was mainly so we could film the talking scenes as one whole thing as opposed to us doing shot-reverse-shot with one camera where we would have to get the actors to repeat their lines more than once. We at first found it difficult to work with the two reels of footage on the editing line, but Jodie suggested that instead we dragged the footage from camera 2 to the split screen and simply pull the footage down from there. This worked well as it allowed us to work with camera 1 on the main line and just add the additonal footage as and when we needed it.

3. Deciding the length of the flashbacks. In the first verse, we put shots of Emily putting the case into her car and driving off. At first we were unsure whether to try a continous flow like originally planned or stick to the jump cuts. We analysed the situation, and felt that due to the fact we only wanted short shots it would look most effective to do the jump cuts. It took us a good 10 minutes manipulating the footage to get it to the perfect length, and we asked our teacher once or twice on her opinion as to whether certain shots (such as the one of Emily from inside the car) was too long. She preffered the quick style editing, so we adjusted it to this length.

Effects used:
We felt that we needed some type of transition from the reaction shot of Emily after the cheating flashback to the start of the actual song. We decided not to use white dip, black dip and cross disolve as we already have them in our production. Looking through the effects list we found zoom, and just tried it to see what it looked like. We dragged it from the effects box on to the edit line and placed it inbetween the reaction shot and the extreme close up that starts the song; we then dragged it in to reduce the length. The effect this gave us was then a quick zoom into Emilys face that then zoomed out to Charlottes extreme close up. We luckily really liked this and decided it was a good way to establish the pre-song footage ending and the actual song starting.

2. Reduced Speed. The close up reaction shot of Emilys face was something we felt was essential to the story after the flashback scenes. However, we only managed to obtain one decent shot of Emily doing this, and it was of quite a short length. As there was not much happening in the picture we decided to reduce the speed of it to pro-long it. We did this by right clicking the footage box and clicking the speed/duration option, we then reduced the speed number to 50%. This worked quite well, as it made the shot the length we wanted to it to be.

3. Increased Speed. When we edited the shots of Emily reversing in the car and leaving the drive, we found that although we reduced the shot lengths down, the car movement was still slow in comparison to the pace which we were going for (the first one in particular). So, to ammend this we increased the first shot to 150%, and the rest to 125%. This worked well, as it wasn't fast enough to look like it had intentionally been speeded up, but made it look as if Emily had just made a fast maneouver in her car.

(End of information taken from Laura and Jodie's blogs)

How do I feel about the production so far?
I believe we are on target to meeting our deadline for our first draft. The girls worked very hard during this editing time and with two more days booked I believe there will be a positive outcome. If we dont manage to edit the whole song we shall hopefully have some good quality shots and something to display to the class.

Permission Letter

As we were using an established song it was necessary for us to write a letter to the copyright holders. One of my team members Laura wrote this and we sent it off. We believe that we will not receive a reply but due to legal rights it was best to send one.

Dear Copyright Holder,

For our current A-Level Media Studies Advanced Portfolio we are producing our own music videos; this will consist of us performing the song, and editing it on a software programme that our school provides us with. As a group, we decided on a girl-group theme and the song we decided to chose was ‘Missing You’ (The Saturdays). We are writing to seek your permission to use this song in our video.

To briefly explain a little bit more about our production, we would be creating a video which is then supported with a digipak and a magazine advertisement. We hope to demonstrate our skills of storyboarding, camera-work and editing. Also, we would just like to make very clear that the use of this song is only for educational purposes, and would not be exploited in any other way (such as to a large audience or websites).

Throughout the whole process of this task, the artist that originally sung the track will be recognised and we would not try to pass off the product as our own in any way. Our examining body is OCR, and they will be more than happy to clarify that this is a legitimate educational task. If you would like to send us a copyright notice to feature in our coursework, we would happily oblige with your requirements; if this is the case, please send the information to the address listed above.

We’d like to thank you for taking the time to read this, and look forward to hearing from you.

Your Sincerely,

Laura Pinkney, Charlotte Andreas, Sophie Legge and Jodie Butcher.

Editing 20/10/10

First we had to cut down unwanted filming! Again this took a long time but proved more helpful when choosing our desired shots. We managed to edit all flashbacks which set us on target.

We also uploaded our footage of the opening scene (which was filmed from the two cameras) When capturing we were able to watch and assess which shots would be better to use.

We will next be editing on 22/10/10 and we will concentrate on editing our footage. My group have also booked the computers on Wednesday and Thursday in the half term in order to keep on schedule. Our deadline is 3rd November.

Filming Day 6

Date: Monday 18th October

Time: 2:00pm

Location: Sophie's house

The aim of today was to film all Emily and Joe's flashbacks and the audio drama before the music starts. I feel the filming went well as we achieved all that was scheduled for.

How we demonstrated new techniques:
We wanted to demonstrate higher skills than what we had used at As. We did this by using two cameras and filming one scene from two different angles. We hoped this would help us achieve match on action and the best shot reverse shot sequence. We believe this may be tricky to edit but wanted to give it a go anyway.

Overall, this idea worked very well. The only problem we faced was making sure the other camera was not in the shot. Both myself and Laura were operating the cameras and we took extra caution to ensure each shot was framed correctly. We were unaware what the results were going to be but hoped that the two cameras would make the scene look more professional rather than filming the same scene twice from different angles.

Below i have included pictures of flashback shots and angles.

The most imaginative shot of the day:

I came up with the idea that we could film Emily from inside the car. Emily would be putting her suitcase in the car so to get a front shot of her doing this would give us an advanced camera technique. We did not use the tripod for this so i used my hand to keep the camera very steady. We had to film this shot a few times because we wanted to ensure we framed Emily in the centre.

Although we are stripped for time, I believe we will be able to show a first cut after half term. The only concern we had with this deadline is that we did not want our shots to look rushed. A lot of filming today was done without the tripod as we wanted to speed up filming time and capture a variety of angles. We managed to film all the shots we had planned and more which we thought of whilst filming.

What we need to do before half term

Unfortunately I am away during the half term, so we had to do as much group work as possible this week. (18/10/10)

The plan:

1. Film all flashback scenes by the end of Tuesday

2. Upload all footage for this

3. Continue editing (try to get to the first chorus)

4. On Friday a group discussion will take place and we will plan for the new term.

Similarities and differences with The Saturdays

The Saturdays vs Us

1. We have both used extreme close ups

2. We have both used a car for a prop.

3. We have both used a forest shot, (low angle)

4. We have both used a forest tree as a prop.

5. We have both included a dance sequence.

6. We have both used a change in location.

Difference: we chose to film ours in a house, The Saturday's filmed at a party.

7. We have included extra actors in our video

8. The Saturday's have chosen to use a dusk setting for some of their shots.

The Lyrics to 'Missing You'

I miss missing you
I miss missing you

Where's the pain when you walk out the door
It doesn't hurt like it used to before
Where's the love that we couldn't ignore
It doesn't kick like a pill anymore
Where's the thrill at the end of our fights
Where's the heat when we turn off the lights

I just miss all the miss that we made
When we still have the passion to hate

I miss missing you, sometimes
I miss hurting you 'til you cry
I miss watching you as you try
Try not to end up in tears
Begging to get back together
I just want you to be
To be stuck in a second forever
So don't freak out and believe.

Sometimes I'm just missing
Missing You
I miss missing you

There’s a dark cloud pulling me in
That’s the girl I was breathing in sin
There’s a blind force letting it win
And it’s longing to tear us apart
I get high when you’re making me weak
Let me down ’til I crawl on my knee’s

I just miss all the mess that we made
When we still have the passion to hate

I miss missing you sometimes
I miss hurting you ’til you cry
I miss watching you as you try
Try not to end up in tear’s
Begging to get back together
I just want you to be
To be stuck in this second forever
So don’t freak out if I leave

Sometimes I’m just missing, missing you
I miss missing you

Miss missing, miss missing, miss missing
I wanna crush in your arms at the other side of the world
Miss missing, miss missing, miss missing
I wanna die for you ’cause love is only true if it hurts

I miss missing you sometimes
I miss hurting you ’til you cry
I miss watching you as you try
Try not to end up in tear’s (ooh)
Begging to get back together (together)
I just want you to be (want you to be, yeah)
To be stuck in this second forever
So don’t freak out if I leave

Sometimes I’m just missing (I’m missing)
Missing you (no, missing you)
I miss missing you

Editing 14/10/10

Our editing began today and we started editing the first verse, we had the tools to do this as we had already filmed our shots at Epping Forest.

What did we edit?
There was approximately 2 hours worth of filming, so we used the razor tool to cut out any unwanted footage. This made it a lot easier when choosing the best scenes. To begin, we thought it would be easier if we matched the lip syncing to the words in the song (which we had dragged onto the audio line), we all had certain bits that we had sung so this part was fairly easy. As we had played the music along with us when filming our lip syncing was mostly spot on.

We wanted an establishing nature shot of the forest. We had filmed several shots but ended up going with a spinning shot of the forest (this was Sophie's idea) This shot was placed after the first bit of lip syncing. We also felt the shot went extremely well with the next shot of me up close and lip syncing, the story flowed and gave the audience a basic introductory. We looked through other nature shots but decided to use a shot which we had done accidently of the camera turning in the forest. This seemed to work perfectly giving the music video a fantastic pop opening.

This was the end of editing my verse, as it was very long we wanted to introduce the rest of the group and continue Emily and Joes storyline, therefore we moved onto Laura's verse, again this would be a lip syncing section and this made an easy start to introducing her. For Laura's opening line, we used two different shots but wanted them to flow, we used the razor tool to adjust when we wanted the first shot to end and the second shot to start. This caused quite a problem as the transition that we had done showed Laura with her eyes closed, we readjusted this and made the second shot longer.

What effects did we use in editing?

Reverse Play:
We used this effect in a way that would go unnoticeable if you were watching the video. In our second nature shot we chose to play this backwards as it looked far more effective. This was done by selecting the speed and duration button and then choosing reverse play.

Speed reduction:
We used speed reduction to slow down the spinning nature shot, this gave it a better timing to the music. We done this by selecting speed and duration and changing it from 100% to 50%.

Dip to black:
We used dip to black instead of cuts, this made the sequence flow better and was an alternative to using the same effects. We first use this just after my 'Missing You' close up just after I had finished singing. We also tried cross dissolve but thought dip to black was more effective.

Cross dissolve:
Cross dissolve was a great technique to use to soften transitions. We first used this for my lip synching part and the first nature shot, this enabled the shots to flow into one another and looked very effective. Cross dissolve was selected under shot transitions.
